Faith and Friends will be begin their fall session on Wednesday, October 6, at 5:30pm for a light supper followed by games, lessons, music, crafts and much more. Call ahead to register your child, or bring to the double doors of the new addition to have them join the fun. Call the office for more information 774-5023 or to help with meals or organization.

Youth Fellowship Begins 9/15!

Middle school and high school youth fellowship begins their gatherings this evening at 6:00 for the middle schoolers, and 7:30 for the high schoolers. Come check it out!

Fellowship Potlucks & Program Third Sundays

On the third Sundays of September, October & November FUMC will be hosting a potluck. The first one is this Sunday, September 19th, so bring a dish to share and stay to listen to our first guests and their recent trip to the Holy Lands. October 17 and November 21 will feature other members and their recent trips. FUMC will provide a selection of soups and plastic table service, you bring a side dish or dessert. Join us!

Fall Thrift Sale Fast Approaches

There are many a task to be completed in preparing for the Fall Thrift Sale. We are busily organizing all the treasures we've received, and making room for more in the coming weeks. But the week prior to the sale we will need many hands to make light work. Please consider donating an hour or two (or six or seven) to getting the Thrift Sale and Beef burger Luncheon ready. We will work October 2, 4 and 5 unloading closets, getting items to the right area, marking a few items that need it, folding, arranging, etc., etc., etc. No one will be bored!

The doors open for the sale at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 6. During the sale we will need workers to help at the checkouts, refold and reorganize things and whatever else needs done.

If you would please also donate homemade pies and salads for the Beef Burger Luncheon, it would be greatly appreciated! This is YOUR church having this fundraiser. Please make YOUR contribution in the best way that you can, so that we can minister to others in the best way we know how.

Please call the office for more information regarding food, donations, work hours, etc. We'll have the answer for you or find one! 774-5023

Sunday School Begins September 12th!

We look forward to the beginnng of the new program year with something for everybody. K-12 are working on a good foundation with Jesus at the center. All other things flow from that. We have a place for your children. Women's Book Studies (Room 201) is starting the book "Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World" by Joanna Weaver. The Chapel hosts the quarterly material study lead by Dorothy Mason. Another study in the library, hosted by Betty Pierschbacher, will cover some of the smaller books of the Bible. Pastor Allen is leading a series entitled "To Save the Family" in the Levis room. Something for everyone - every Sunday a 9:00 a.m. with worship to follow at 10:00 a.m. We look forward to meeting with you.

Worship Alternatives

The worship committee has begun discussions about worship alternatives. Whatever we create would probably be more informal and more contemporary. We are looking at four possible times: Saturday evening (about 5 pm), Sunday morning (about 8 am), Sunday evening (about 6:30 pm) or a unique time, Thursday evening (about 6:30 pm).

Why would we look for new service times when we aren't full on Sunday mornings? It would be to reach a new audience on one hand and convenience for our current members on the other. Give your opinion to the pastor or e-mail the church office.

Blood Drive - July 29 - FUMC

Time for the Chariton Community Churches Blood Drive at FUMC! It is scheduled from 2:30 -7 p.m. in the fellowship hall at 923 Roland. You may call the office at 774-5023 to schedule an appointment ahead of time, but walk-ins are welcome. Join us as we collect this life-giving fluid to help so many others!

It is my pleasure to announce that Rev. John & Sylvia Poe will be our guests on Sunday, August 8. John will be talking about his and Sylvia's experience at The Depot, which is the mission center from whch all the various kits you make are distributed. They happened to be there at the time of the Haitian earthquake and they were tasked to getting out the health kits as fast as possible. Come gree the Poes and hear what kind of difference your sharing makes in the lives of those who are most needy.

Pool Party Moved to Sunday July 18!

Due to the rainy weather last weekend, the Pool Party for FUMC has been moved to this Sunday, July 18, right after worship. Come join us for worship at 10 a.m., swimming at the pool at 11 a.m. and free hot dogs and chips for lunch! Fun for all ages!

VBS: Joseph's Journey from Prison to Palace

Vacation Bible School is right arond the corner! It will take place at FUMC beginning Monday, July 5 through Friday, July 9, 6 to 8 p.m.

Children and adults can step back in time to Egypt, exploring the life of Joseph. Everyone will participate in a memorable Bible-times marketplace, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, dig into Egyptian eats, visit Joseph in prison and then in his palace home, and collect Bible Memory Makers to remind them of God's Word. Plus, everyone learns to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings. Each day opens and concludes at Celebration - a time of upbeat worship that gets everyone involved.

You can pre-register your child any time by calling the office, 774-5023. We'll update your child's information or have you fill out a new registration sheet if this is your child's first activity at FUMC.

4th of July Worship Schedule

As in years past, we will be cooperating with the Chariton Interchurch Council by participating in the 10 a.m. ecumenical worship on the square (Johnson Auditorium in the event of bad weather).

To do this, worship will be early at FUMC at 8:30 a.m. The format will be more informal than usual. We invite you to join us for this opportunity. (No Sunday School 7/4 because of worship times.)

The ecumenical worship will begin at 10 a.m. and we encourage you to be a part of the celebration. This year, the music will be provided by a pastor's band composed of Don Hayes (Assembly of God), the youth directors of the Baptist church on drums, the youth pastor from Cornerstone on bass, and the pastor of FUMC on guitar. Yes, it's true. I will be making my first public guitar appearance, and I pledge to you, I will make every effort NOT to embarrass this congregation. In any case, it will be entertaining, so join us and see how (I and) we do!

Summer Study Opportunities

New: Anna Anderson, returning for the summer, talked to Michele and out of their conversation a group of 9 young adults met and decided to do a Bible study called "Crazy Love." As their schedules dictate, they vary when they meet. So call Anna or Michele Baker for times and places. The invitation is out for our young adults. Check it out!

Women's Study: The women's Max Lucado study continues each Sunday at 9 in Room 201. We invite interested individuals to join these ladies in discussion and growth.

Pastor's Study: Hot Button Topics continue at 9:00 with coffee, donuts and discussion. Upcoming topics include: 6/27 - homosexuality; 7/11 - stem cell research; 7/18 - Christians and war; 7/25 - marriage and family.

Summer Reading Program

The Youth Ministries Team and the Chariton Public Library are teaming up to provide a reading program for K-5th grade students. Volunteers are reading to students Wednesdays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the children's section at the public library. If you'd like to help, contact the chuch office or Michele Baker. We have a few volunteers, but we can use a few more. We certainly invite you to have your child utilize this service to help them practice reading and keep their speed and comprehension over the summer.

Confirmation Sunday - April 11

Men't Gathering Saturday, April 17th

What does it mean to be a Christian man in the modern world? You've heard it from a lot of people, but join the South Central United Methodist Men and the Christian Motorcycle Association as we explore this together. You know this is a meeting with a difference as we begin at 9 a.m. with a Show and Shine motorcycle show outside the church on Roland Avenue. Come enjoy the bikes and then stay to hear Gary Ogren of the CMA and others in testimony, witness and an exploration of being a Christian man in a modern world.

Thrift Sale Coming Up! April 14-16

We needs lots of help setting up, pricing, getting everything ready. Sale begins on Wednesday, April 14, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and continues Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. ($1.00/sack sale).

There is also a beef burger luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. We need homemade pies and salads to serve. Please contact the church office for more information, 774-5023.

Miki's Travels

Miki Allen left Chariton Friday, February 12 at 6:30 am and headed south dealing with "frosty fog". Going through Springfield, MO it started to snow again, but continued through MO on the curvy, up and sown roads into Arkansas. She said usually she loves this area, on the back of the bike, but had to maneuver the curves herself. "I have to give Tom credit for his handling the curves on the bike." She drove out of the snow, finally, south of Little Rock! Stopped in Pine Bluff, AR for the night, and watched the opening of the Olympics.

Miki was back on the road by 8 the next morning, driving now on very flat terrain. One memorable sight was a pick up that passed her pulling a fishing boat. In the back of the truck was a tool box and perched on top was a "big ole yellow hound dog" with his chin resting on top of the cab and looking down the road like he knew where he was going. His ears were flapping in the breeze. "I'm sure in another life that hound was a Harley rider," Miki commented. Miki had driven about 100 miles when SNOW appeared again. Louisiana got about an inch of snow on Friday and looked really strange.

She arrived in Natchez, MS about 1 p.m. and had lunch at her favorite area "Under the Hill." The one-way street is carved out of the bank of the Mississippi. Miki encountered Mardi Gras parades and traffic was a mess as people, even along the Interstate, left their cars and went to the parade! Arrived in Houma, LA about 5:30. The motel she stayed at even had a Mardi Gras party on Saturday night. Sunday she will venture on to Dulac. She ended her e-mail with "Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler." (Let the Good Times Roll!)
